Time Machine: Exo And Their Teasers

I may be the only person in the world who fell in love with the Exo teasers, but I definitely did.  Sure it got a bit cumbersome after like 12 teasers of Kai, but I couldn’t help but throughly enjoy nearly all of the instrumentals and song snippets featured.  Exo really came out such with “exotic” and clean music that was interesting and relevant in their teasers, that it was actually pretty disappointing to see “History” and “MAMA” as the final product after the epic teasers. “History” and “MAMA” are not bad songs, but they are certainly underwhelming after that slew of teasers.

So in light of the new album coming out, whose tracklist you can see here, I’ve decided to take a trip through my favorite teasers/teaser songs. Several of these have been or will be released as full songs, and others I totally have no idea about.  You can also check out the “speculated” tracklist here from about a year ago.  (Is it sad that I think the speculated tracklist sounds better than the actual one?)

“My Lady”

Seeing “My Lady” right at the outset totally increased my expectations for Exo, I’m not going to lie. I thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of this teaser, from the lighting to the styling to the set and the song.  I’m really ecstatic that the song is going to be released in full in XOXO, because I know that a lot of us have been hoping for the full version for a long time know.  Yoo Young Jin‘s RnB compositions are always amazing, and “My Lady” seems to be no exception.

“Angel”

I’m in love with “Angel” as a song, and as a teaser, I loved it even more.  The instrumental is gorgeous, and the outdoor landscape and antique props helped the ambiance so much. It really sounds weird when I talk about the the myriad of components that magically turn into a good teaser, but believe me, they do. Here’s Teaser #9 featuring Sehun and Luhan:

I’m also a huge fan of Lay and Sehun’s version as well. The way they actually took advantage of the box set rather than just dancing in it was really refreshing to see.

“What is Love”

I really liked this duo of teasers because it just looked awesome, it’s as simple as that. The lighting was impeccable, and I thought the neutral color palette of the two teasers was beautiful. Watching Sehun and Kai dancing/moving between sets was neat and I liked the “mini story” between Kai and Sehun across teasers.  You pretty much have watch it yourself to get what I mean.  “What is Love” is also a great song as well, and the dance only enhanced how good the song is.

“Reflection I”

I know that this will never be a song, and it wasn’t even Exo’s song in the first place, but I liked the piano, and therefore it is going to be here. Again, the ambiance is really amazing, such that I totally was able to gloss over how unnatural everything about this teaser was.

“Beautiful”

I probably am the only one who really wants this song to come out. I haven’t really heard anyone else talk about it online, but for me, the piano sells the whole song. I don’t even care about how monotonous the song actually sounds. The instrumental alone will make me happy forever.

Oh, and my favorite part of the teaser? That big white fluffy dog Baekhyun is petting!

“El Dorado”

I may have gushed over “Beautiful”‘s instrumental, but “El Dorado” takes the cake for me.  I actually found a full version on youtube (you can see it here), but I’m super curious about what a song would sound like over the epic of the instrumental we already have. I don’t know whether I should though.

“Baby Don’t Cry”

This is probably the second most requested song to be released in its entirety, and I’d have to agree. “Baby Don’t Cry” sounds fantastic so far, and I don’t think that there’s much out there that can possibly ruin it.  The great news is that it is showing up in Exo’s newest album, so I guesss SM does grant wishes after all!

I’m also a huge fan of the teaser just because of the minimalism and the effect of the shadows in how we watch the dance. The “piano” playing part was really interesting to see, and I really liked Kai’s presence here.

So that’s about it in my list of favorites. Which teasers did you all like, if you liked any of them? Are there any songs that you want to see in their entirety?

Oh yeah, I almost forgot.  Here’s the lackluster teaser for “Wolf“:

  4. I was right there with you loved checking youtube every day to see when the next teaser came out because i saw it as a story that set the groundwork for their debut song MAMA which for me is right up there with the teasers because of its dramatic and exotic sound. Lol no pun intended. My favorite teasers were let out the beast lightsaber run and gun and phoenix i mean i loved all of them but i the more intense and visually appealing aspects just blew me away:)
